Rain, Wind and Germany

Today we set off from the middle of Denmark and were immediately greeted by pouring rain. As a motorcyclist, you have the right gear for this kind of weather. The real problem isn’t the rain suit—it’s the gloves.

After every fuel stop or break, it’s the same struggle. Once your hands are wet, getting your gloves back on becomes a challenge. And when you finally manage it, taking them off again later often feels like you’re pulling your fingers out with them. Every rider knows exactly what I’m talking about.

After several hours, we decided to continue on the country roads for as long as it made sense and only switched to the motorway shortly before the German border. Riding small roads in heavy rain simply stops being enjoyable at some point.

The motorway brought its own challenges. Strong crosswinds kept pushing the bikes around, especially when overtaking trucks. One moment the wind came from the side, the next it hit us as we cleared a truck. It demanded full concentration for many kilometers.

From there, we continued through Germany until just beyond Hanover.

By the end of the day, we had covered 544 kilometers, many of them in demanding conditions.

Tonight we’re staying at the Landgasthof Zur Scharfen Ecke in Itzum. A comfortable room, a reserved table for dinner, and finally a chance to dry all our soaking wet riding gear.

The only really nice photo I managed to take today was actually at around 4:00 a.m. on the campsite. For a brief moment, the rising sun painted the sky in beautiful colors before the rain took over once again.

Tomorrow, we still have a little over 400 kilometers to go before we finally roll back into our own garages.

A detailed trip summary—including our thoughts on both Moto Guzzis—will follow this weekend.

Until then: Ride safe!
