Today we tackled a true highlight: the legendary Transalpina Road. Unfortunately, the mountain greeted us with thick fog and only 10°C. At times, we had to ride at walking speed. The views were completely hidden – and so, no photos this time. Still, the ride itself was an experience.
Note to future riders: Fuel up beforehand! There were more than 130 kilometers between gas stations today. Matthias had to use fuel from his spare canister – thankfully he brought one. I made it to the next station with what must have been just 50 ml left in the tank. Very close call.
After the Transalpina, the weather cleared up, and we visited the fortified church of Biertan – a beautiful and historical spot. It was built in the 15th century by Transylvanian Saxons, and many signs are still in German. A fascinating step back in time.
Entry cost 20 Lei per person (about €4), and it was well worth it. The highlight? A bizarre relic from the past: the marital prison. If a couple was fighting, they were locked in a small room with just one bed, one chair, one table, one plate, one cup, and one spoon – until they agreed to reconcile. Simple but brutal marriage therapy!
Tonight, we’re staying at Casa Traditionale Transilvania in Rucar – a great place for dinner and some rest while I write this blog post.
Tomorrow, we head for another iconic road: the Transfăgărășan. Let’s go!
