Farewell Romania – Two Raindrops and a Thousand Impressions

Today we left Romania, a country that truly surprised and impressed us over the past several days. The landscapes, the roads, the atmosphere – it all came together beautifully. Romania showed its best side.

One moment will definitely stick with me:

As we were getting ready one morning, I told Matthias,

“Go ahead, I just felt a raindrop.”

A minute later: “Another one.”

Those were the only two raindrops we had the entire time in Romania. Can’t ask for better luck with the weather.

The mornings were pleasantly cool, but by 3 PM, the sun was always full blast – helmet roasting levels. But hey, that’s summer on the road.

Today’s ride took us through beautifully winding roads, flowing like ribbons through the landscape – and also long, flat stretches. Thanks to the time zone change (we gained an hour), we managed a solid 500 kilometers.

As usual, we had a simple snack break – although proper rest areas with tables are rare around here. Often, a single bench has to do. We also got to enjoy a short ferry crossing, which added a nice twist to the day.

What really stood out today: we saw hundreds of abandoned buildings – ruins, collapsed homes, empty shells of the past. You could spend all day photographing them. Why there are so many? No clue. But it makes you reflect.

Tonight we’ve landed in Solt, Hungary, and booked a small apartment at EuroVelo6 Stop. Now we’re off to find something to eat.

Tomorrow we ride toward Austria.

We drove the following route today:

Total distance: 498.42 km
Total time: 09:50:02
